Blogging – Personal, Professional, and the Job Search

Blogging – Personal, Professional, and the Job Search

In today’s world with blogging, social media, and (my own) obsession with online reputation I often ponder what is appropriate for someone to put out on their blog? I especially wonder too about posts regarding personal feelings, political opinions, and other controversial subjects when in the midst of a job search.

I’m still going back and forth on the subject but I think that the more people know about you up front, the more likely they will be to pursue you as a potential hire.  Rather than just blindly sending out resumes, I think having some sort of way to personally connect with people (including hiring managers) through a blog allowing them to get to know a little about you could be an advantage over other candidates.

I also think that posting about other things, especially things that you might be a little insecure about, might show a little human element to your blog.  Sure I could post only about things I am completely sure about in a professional manner, but that is kind of cold and most of it is just rehashed information from other blogs anyway.  I think that you need to reach out and connect to the reader on a human level and show that there is a person on the other side of the blog.

So that is my plan is to post good information about design and marketing plus some personal thoughts about life, politics, and others topics.
